Dear Friends,

What a week. Some are despondent and some elated. But we’re all in this together. Let’s keep the following in mind:

Be united. Friends do not become enemies when they vote for candidates we oppose. People choose parties and candidates for all sorts of reasons. Diverse political opinions are represented within our congregation. We can still sit together at kiddish, in classes, at dinners, and at services. We’re still friends.

Get involved. The ballot box is but one way we express deeply held beliefs. The United States boasts a vibrant civic sector. So get involved. Support financially and devote time and expertise to organizations with missions that align with your values. If you’re feeling down, indulge in your sadness for a couple of days. Then get busy.

Don’t be cruel. There has been far too much of that. Over the last few weeks, I’ve flipped the radio from liberal to conservative radio stations: 820-890-820-890. Talk show hosts express such disdain toward those on the other side. I’ve heard “dumb,” “stupid,” “yahoos.” I’ve heard the purposeful mispronunciation of names and ridiculing of appearances. Such behavior is not befitting mature people and it does not accord with Jewish values.

Carry on. Continue to do what makes you happy. Enjoy your morning coffee. Walk in the woods. Listen to music. Read good books. Make time for friends. Go to the movies. And come here, to your synagogue home, for it is indeed a sanctuary where we can talk Torah, sing songs, schmooze, and pray.

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Jeffrey Weill
