Rabbi Weill

Dear Friends,

A new generation ariseth in this week’s Torah portion, Pinchas. God establishes that the high priesthood will come from the line of Pinchas, Aaron’s grandson. Meanwhile, the daughters of Zelophechad successfully appeal directly to Moses for the right to inherit, even though they are female. Finally, Moses publicly ordains Joshua as his successor.

Pinchas is a Torah portion of succession.

Every healthy institution must establish and follow processes for new leadership to emerge. One of the blessings of our democracy is the smooth transfer of power through free and fair elections. We celebrate our democracy this weekend.

We also celebrate Rabbi Neil Brief, who has served our congregation ably and who has also been the sort of rabbinic predecessor who has helped to foster the growth and success of his successors.

Please join us for services Friday night at 8 pm and Saturday at 9:30 am as we celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Rabbi Brief’s service to our community.

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Jeffrey Weill
